Drafting and planning double page spread

I have made this double page spread with a person called Olesya Rulin who i would like the style of my model for my magazine to look like. She suits the pop indie style i am aiming for. The two other double page spread images i have posted have influenced me into doing the layout like this with the big letter and the image on the one side of the page. This suits my theme as a pop theme for my magazine and would look right in the Billboard magazine.

I am sure i want the one letter on the right hand side in big with columns. Its easy for you to read if it is in columns than rather all over the place. I think the colour of the letter depends on the theme as i have used grey now as it goes with the photo.

Drafting and planning a magazine

In response to my research on magazine covers trying to find ideas for my own and the layout of what i want mine to be. I made a magazine cover similar to the photo i found of Barbara Palvin and the Rolling Stones magazine with Rihanna on.

They are both similar because the pose they are doing is to the one side and as i said i like all the cover stories on one side of the magazine i have done this.

The way i have used all female artists shows that the audience is aimed at females.
The way that all the stuff on the left makes it clear for people to see on the shelves. Also the model Shannon is looking straight into the camera showing direct address.
I would like to do something like this however have some cover times and not just names on the side. I would want to use a quote on the front which would then get to a bigger one on the double page spread.

Another response it is to is my research task of Selena Gomez. I have tried to make it like hers as i do like it,

I like the way i have done this magazine however I do not know if its what i would want to do in my final. I think with all the other magazines i have researched they all have a theme on the front cover and with the magazine that is very simple and doesn't have a lot of colouring.

I like how this magazine looks and follows how 'Billboard' magazines are. It shows how that is the magazine that has influenced me.

Double page spread research

I really like the style of this two page spread page, it is like the other two i like and has used a simple black and white colour to make all the things stand out. The way she is wearing red makes her stand more out making her look important and draws all the attention towards her. The clothes she is wearing are normal and nothing special like some of the celebs that get dressed up. This fits in with the main head line as the way it is layered out looking like its been cut up shows the normality of the star also. I would like to use a quote in my double page spread as i think it looks effective and makes the reader feel engaged more because they then know what what they are reading isn't lies. I like the columns as they are easy to  
read - most magazines to this to keep it simple which i would also like to do.

I think with my magazine I want my model to wear normal clothes and not any fancy ones. It will fit with who she is. 

research into magazine / similar products

I like the style of this magazine where Rihanna is on one side and all the cover lines are to the one side of the magazine. This makes the cover look more organised and easy for the audience to read. Its simple but effective and has inspired me to do something like that for my magazine.

This image of the model Barbara Palvin has also had an effect on me and can fit in with the magazine like Rihanna with her pose.  If i did the style of what Barbara Palvin is doing i would be able to put all the cover lines down the right hand side. This has made me want to do something like that. I has encouraged me more to go along with my decision and not have a band/ a boy but use a girl artist for my front cover.

They both have the pop style look which will go well with my billboard type magazine.
The one on the left - Barbara really suits a pop indie look.

The poses are just like the one I liked in my research task with Selena Gomez. I am going to take a photo like these and make a magazine draft to see if i like it and would want to follow on doing it.

 

Double page spread research

I really like this double page spread layout, the way the one whole side is the photo of the star who is Lana Del Rey shows how important she is. The way the text is put  in columns makes it easy to understand so you don't have any difficulty. It is very simple but effective and the big S makes. Recently i have posted a double spread page of Katy Perry with there being a bold letter in the background also - I really like these type of cover pages and would like to do it in my magazine.

I like the camera work of the image, its dark making it look mysterious with a red streak running through her hair. This is the only bold colour used suggesting things like love, passion and lust. The way the camera techniques used circles almost made it look like they are stars, that is what you think about seeing them showing how shes a star.

I like the way the image is unusual and Lana Del Rey is not looking at the camera but has her eyes closed, this is not normal for magazines to do this as it goes against the usual conventions of a magazine layout.

Remake / remodel task

My magazine choice was Q magazine so therefore the cover image and story I have used which is the pop star Lilly Allen fits in with the ethos. I'm sure of this because researching the other Q magazines Lilly Allen was the main image for one.
The way i have made the ' Free posters inside' at the top makes it appeal more to people as you can see it straight away as it is blending in with the title and is the most brightest colour on there.

The colours all go well together because the box backing the cover line and the cover line down the bottom are the same colour, making the colours match makes the magazine look more professional. Having black and white as the title just makes it more simple not taking any of the attention off the main star.

I have not left many negative space on my magazine just enough to see the background of the image. With this picture - seeing the background of the picture makes it more effective as it makes the cover star seem more casual which goes with the style of the image with her looking down.

It is essential that you have the price and date line of the magazine and making them black with plain writing does not take any attention off any of the cover lines getting them mistaken so having them at the right size is important.
Using the model and Lilly Allen shows how the target audience is aimed at more females than male. 

Double page spread analysis

In this double page spread Katy Perry is the main image, mise-en-scene is used as the whole theme of it is black and white making it look original, simple and vintage.  Having it in black and white also makes it look professional as so does the columns makes it look professional also.The clothes that she is wearing relates to this as well as they are vintage and appeals to the audience. The lighting in the image is very bright enhancing the star. The main star is very big and takes up half the page showing how important she is.

The main title is bubbly and round which suggests that it may appeal to females more than males as it would be more bold if it was. The darkness of the colour contrasts with the white background making it stand out more. It emphasises it and makes it stand out so you know that it is the main title.  Straight away in the sub heading you know who it is about with Katy Perry in bold, using the word 'Hot pants' links with the image as that is what she is wearing.

I would like to do something like this in my magazine as she does relate to the genre i want to do which is pop and is quite girly. I like the colours used as they are professional and make it look better. Its makes the star look more important and the way she is standing looking at the camera shows the direct address that she wants between the audience and her making you feel like you have an insight to her life.

Preliminary task

This is my school magazine that i had to create, I had to create the cover page and contents page as my preliminary task. 

As i did some questionnaires on school magazines and what people would like to see in them, the colours on them and information i took that in and tried to make a magazine that would suit what most people said. I used a medium close up image for my main cover star with him looking at the camera creating direct address with the reader. It suits the main cover line as the way he is standing shows he has a good structure which the head boy would have so they link together.

Most of my questionnaire people said they would like to see achievements which is why i included it in my front cover as a cover story to attract the reader to go inside. Including the achievements also big the school up making the school look better and showing off what we can do.

Showing on the front cover clearly that prom photos are inside shows the audience that it is just not going to be loads of writing but also some pictures as well to even the magazine out and make it appeal to more audiences as most people said they would want to see loads of pictures. If we included pictures younger years would also want to see the magazine as they would not just have to read it.

Based on what i have learnt about magazines putting 'Win an Ipad' in a star drags the readers attention as its such an easy win for you and a big prize. If i didn't put this on the front people wouldnt know and therefore wouldnt enter or may not even read the magazine. If people are eager to enter the competition i have put it on the 7th page of my magazine so if they did they would have to flick through all of the pages so they would end up reading it and not letting the magazine o to waste and just putting it in the bin.

The font writing all links together as all of it is the same and it would run through my magazine making it look more professional. I also have made it look professional by using a colour theme, using the colours white black and red link with the school logo and uniform making it look apart of the school and not some random magazine. This preliminary task has made me improve on my skills of making a magazine cover and will help me for my final one.

Target Audience magazine

I want my magazine to be popular so therefore I want my music to be pop style, like the big top 40.This appeals to loads of people as the people in the Big Top 40 have very popular fan base. The way I want my music to be pop/rock would attract both boys and girls unlike something like rap music. Examples of people that do pop rock are Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. There look interests me and many other people and this is why I would like to use it. So my target audience is quite big.

Research

I have decided that with my cover star I don't want to do a band instead I would like to do just one girl. I like the look of this photo and I also like the music genre which is pop/indie. This photo on the front of my magazine would be good because it would appeal to my target audience and age range. It also shows direct address to the reader. It inspires me in my magazine and I like the pose and photography of it and would like to experiment with my model and do things like this. It makes me know who her audience is then as I did some research on her which is young adults. I would want the person for my magazine to be young so this is a good thing as it would get me that audience.

Research similar products

I would like to use a layout like either one of these on my magazine cover I like the way these two magazine covers as they are quite similar, the mast head and main cover line match with the colours which is really effective and would be something i would like to use. The colours are summery and girly which relates to the theme of summer, this has shown me how i should think carefully about the colours i need to use to relate to my music genre. I like the way flowers are in the hair and the look the girl has, i would like my star on my music magazine. The effect on the second one with the lighting has more effect on the first one even though it doesn't include direct address.  

Codes and conventions task

The 'Drakes Dilemma' is alliteration which reaches out at you, it makes it seem catchy and funny which would attract readers and draw them in from when they are reading the magazine from the shelves.

Having the colour red appear three times on the magazine cover makes it have a sort of colour theme to it of black white and red. This suits the magazine and the cover star as he is also wearing black. As I have use rap artists it would not be right if I used colourful colours as rappers are not seem to be jolly etc. so a colour like pink wouldn't go.

I put a headline in a black background with 'inside' going over. This draws the audience to look at this and think there is something interesting going on inside.

I used Chris Brown in another headline and linked them by knowing some information about them myself. I linked them because they are both in the same type of music genre and people most likely compare them.

I made the headline be about Rihanna, all the audience loves a bit of gossip so therefore i thought this would attract them.

Codes and conventions task

I used the name 'Dreamscape' for the band name as it fits the bang as they look very unique and fits the jazz theme. The light yellow in the title contrasts well with the whole light pink background making it stand out. The colour yellow normally associates with people being happy and up lifting which is why i used it. The whole jazz music fits into a happy / jolly type.
I put not only who they are put a headline under. I feel that i put that under because it was not important. The photo that was taken of them looks like they are a well known band and how everything is about them so i tried to suit this.

I put a picture of Lily Allen on the cover also, i feel like some of the old music she did could fit in and as it has not a specific type of music to it we could fit her in as there is not only a saxophone on the picture but a guitar which Lily Allen could play. I put her in the corner as she is nowhere important than the rest. 

Codes and conventions task

The main cover star of the music_x magazine is Bjork. The main headline is her name to show the people reading the magazine who she is, i kept it to a black and white theme to fit in with the magazine as if I added yellow it would look ridiculous. It stands out as there is a white background and not a black one as a black background would just fade with it.I also used white on the cover lines. I think this makes the magazine look like there is a theme to it and appeals to the right people that it needs to be appeal.

I think as an improvement i could of added red to go with the 'x' of the magazine title.

Magazine cover research

I like this magazine cover of the pop star Taylor Swift as it is not a typical magazine cover because it is not a head shot/ close up of the cover star it is a long shot, which allows more room for text and headlines. You would expect to see more girly colours on this magazine as there is a girl as the main image however the colours are more boyish this could influence me as it could mean as I could use a long shot picture on my magazine as I didn't realise how effective it looked before seeing this.

I was looking at some different magazine covers trying to get ideas for what I wanted my own magazine to look like and what genre of music I would like to base it on. I come across a few magazines that I liked the look of and the first is Billboard magazine with Katy Perry as the main picture on the front. I like her sort of music which is pop and the type of look she has which is quite a girlish look. The black masthead contrasts with the light pink background even though it is not a girly colour, it still fits with the theme of the magazine cover.

I asked 10 people to fill out questionnaires that had 10 questions about school news papers and what they thought about them. The first question asked was would reading a school magazine be useful and helpful, 90% of the people said yes and 10% disagreed and said no. Therefore i would think that it was useful as more people agreed rather than disagreed.

The second question on the questionnaire was 'what would you expect to read in a school magazine?' Mostly people answered upcoming events, about daily life in school and what is happening in school with there achievements etc. So therefore in my school magazine i would include all these things as that is what most post people said they wanted to see.

80% of people said that in the school magazine they would like to see the school theme with black, white red and silver as then it will go with the school. The rest of the people said pink would be good to use however i would rather use the school theme as then everything would go and it would look classy. However there was also another question asking if people would like there to be a theme and also 80% said there would like to be which is the school one.

Half of the people i asked answered that they would like the magazine to come out weekly and the other 50% said they would want it to come out monthly. Personally i would prefer it to be monthly as not many stuff happens in a week for the magazine to come out every week.
I asked would you prefer formal or slang in the paper and 4 people answered both, 2 people answered slang and the other 4 people answered formal. Therefore i would use both as people want both students and teachers to write it, the students can write in slang and teachers in formal the get a mixture.

Every person said that they would expect it to be funny and also for it to include pictures of all the students with the writing. It would be more enjoyable to read.

There was a mixture of people that said they would like to see writing about specific students and just general information so it would be better if it included both for everyone.

Sample cover

This is my sample magazine cover with Trent Reznor on the cover as the cover star. We had to delete the background of his picture to put him in front of the masthead. This was useful because we got to see how cropping tools work and if they was useful or not.  I added his name also in white as his jacket is dark so i thought it would be the best colour to stand out.

Conventions of a magazine

This is a magazine cover that i analysed to show my knowledge of magazine covers and why things are used on there. This helps me know then what to do and put on for my magazine.

Analysis of magazine cover

The word ‘Billboard’ is covered because Justin Bieber is more important than anything on the cover, he's also is in the center of the magazine showing he is the main focus.They have used a good picture of Justin Bieber as he is looking good to attract the fans, it makes it seem like he is connecting with them as the camera technique used is direct address.

He also is covering his name because most people know who he is as he is a world wide pop star and no one would really need a reminder because Billboard magazines only focus on top artists that are in the charts now and not people who they wouldn't know 20 years ago. They audience would prefer to look at his face also so making his picture bigger makes them more attracted to it. 

The whole colour scheme of the magazine is good. It uses the same colours all over with about 3 different ones. This makes the magazine not look trashy and simple to read. Its based on a dark blue background so the colours in front have to stand out making it look more bold. 

All of the other famous on the ftront cover are in small this shows us how they are not that important in the magazine. It makes you feel like it is mostly going to be about Justin Bieber and the others are featuring in it.

Cropping skills

   This was an exercise i did in my media class which we had to crop a photo on publisher and add 'STACS' to the to of the photo.
It helps you understand how to use magazines more and how to crop to the size that you want, it mostly helps with your front cover.
